Candidate Forums and Pro/Cons

We will be hosting forums for the local school districts, city councils, and Assembly District 26 these will be virtual and broadcast live starting third week of September. All forums will be recorded and available on our YouTube channel.

The California ballot measures are always challenging and this year, as we have in the past, we will be putting together a presentation on the pros and cons of the ballot measures.

Speaking of Defending Our Democracy

As many of you are aware our League filed a lawsuit against the City of Cupertino. We did so because of an ordinance that we felt was overly broad and vague resulting in a violation of our First Amendment rights. We did not take this action lightly and filed the lawsuit only after extensive consultation with and support of our national organization, LWVUS. We want to thank all of you who have reached out to offer your support for this action. Having the support of our members is very important to us.

• Not Going Quietly - The The League of Women Voters of Berkeley, Albany, and Emeryville (LWVBAE) and co-sponsors invite you to join us for the second event in the series “Our US Healthcare System: Facing the Challenges and Bucking the Odds.”  

  On Thursday, November 17, from 6 to 8:45 PM, we will present the documentary, “Not Going Quietly,” which chronicles the response of lawyer and activist, Ady Barkan, when a bill is introduced in Congress that would cut disability benefits he needs for the care of his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The film and panel discussion that follows will be presented virtually and will be free for all attendees.

• Are you a young person interested in combating voter suppression? If so, join us on Saturdays at 3-4:30 pm EDT to make calls to youth voters of color! We'll be calling other young people across the South to combat voter suppression and get out the vote!   What can the League of Women Voters—and you—do to improve our elections? The LWV of SCC is sponsoring two webinars on “State of the Nation: Threats to Our Election Systems/Security and How We Can Better Engage Voters.” Keynote speaker Kim Alexander, President of the California Voter Foundation (CVF), will explore what some major election problems are and offer possible solutions. In response to growing threats and harassment of election officials, Kim and CVF are leading a nationwide, nonpartisan network of leaders across multiple sectors working to support and protect election officials and election administration. Current priorities include improving election workers’ safety and security, curtailing election mis- and disinformation, increasing funding, and support for election administration.

   

  One of the promising approaches to improving elections, Ranked Choice Voting, will be explored more in-depth at a second event on still-to-be-confirmed October 22^nd or 29th. The five LWVs of Santa Clara County support using RCV for all County offices—Board of Supervisors, District Attorney, Sheriff, and Assessor—and wrote this August 10, 2022, letter to the County Board of Supervisors recommending its use.

It's Time to Renew - So You Can Make Things Happen!

Please take a minute to complete your annual membership renewal.  

We are now using our website, www.LWVCS.org to manage the renewal process, so go to the website and click the purple <Member Login> button in the top right corner. If you do not remember your username or password, click the button <Forgot my Username/Password>.  You can also find step by step instructions by clicking <Member Website Help>. Of course, you can also email membership@lwvcs.org and we can help get you started.

Membership fees remain $80 for an individual, $120 for a household and $0 for student members, age 16 and up.  When you renew on-line you will have the option to pay via Credit Card/PayPal, or to mail a check.  Checks should be mailed to LWV Cupertino-Sunnyvale, PO Box 2923, Sunnyvale CA 94087.
