Happy Constitution Week!

Please check out some great ways to discuss, understand, and find ways to strengthen our nation’s civic health:

1 - Friends at ActiVote have launched “Democracy is a Design Challenge,” an interactive digital exercise that links the questions the founders were asking with the challenges we face today. NCoC and Revolutionary Spaces have collaborated with ActiVote on this effort, which provides content for self-reflection or for in-person discussions.
2 - Tuesday, September 13th,  is the California Conference on Citizenship, hosted by the Davenport Institute at the School of Public Policy at Pepperdine University. We invite you to join us (virtually) for the Conference's keynote address, given by California's Chief Service Officer, Josh Fryday. Fryday will also be receiving NCoC’s Hooah Award, given annually to a veteran who defines citizenship through service to our country, both in uniform and beyond.
3 -  On Wednesday, September 14th, there will be a webinar on Local Civic Leaders to explore how local civic leaders are adapting and innovating in the midst of a global pandemic, a more polarized political environment, and a changing technological landscape.

Please join us to celebrate Constitution Week in one or all of these ways! Reply directly with any questions. (from Matt Leighninger, the California Conference on Citizenship)

And Locally, Your Volunteer Opportunity...

Our league will again be helping register and engage voters at the Cupertino Library to mark National Voter Registration Day. This year we will staff the registration table for two days: Sunday September 18 and on National Voter Registration Day itself on Tuesday, September 20, from 10 am to 6 pm. In addition to registering voters, we will provide information about where voters can get more information on candidates and issues. If you can volunteer for a two-hour shift (10-12, 12-2, 2-4 or 4-6) on either or both of those days, please email helenwiant@gmail.com.

LWV Bay Area Update:

Join this LWV Bay Area Community Conversation: Engaging Youth to Register to Vote, a webinar and lively discussion.
Thursday, September 15th from 11 am – 12 Noon https://us20.campaign-archive.com/?u=154f1f4043283144eba0508a4&id=78eedd280a

Leagues are stuck in the simple and sometimes effective mode of tabling at schools and entering classrooms to register students to vote. We have not done enough to emphasize the “engage" portion of our mission. Too often we think that these old methods are enough when they are not.

Four Leagues from around the Bay gather via Zoom to discuss how their outreach to youth voters has changed and how they encourage them to register or pre-register to vote and become engaged in the process.
Join the Leagues of Palo Alto; Oakland and Fremont, Newark, Union City as they present a variety of methods deployed to engage high school students in our democratic process. These innovative ideas range from:

  • Having students focus on a single topic like climate change and asking them to make a video reflecting how their vote could make a difference.
  • Reaching out to private and parochial schools to register students.
  • Creating a music/rap video on why students should vote.
  • Working to pass a local measure so that 16- and 17-year-old students could vote for school board members.

Our presenters are:

  • Peter Pham, Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action Board Member and College Student
  • Liz Jensen, Palo Alto League
  • Carmen Murray & Patricia Arabia Oakland League
  • Julie Dunkle, Fremont, Newark, Union City

Using the Media to Inform and Engage Voters Thursday, September 15, 2022, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM - Webinar via Zoom
Who are “the voters” in our communities?
We want to reach out to non-voters, encourage them, and give them the information they need to vote responsibly.
We want to help all voters make informed choices.
• Who are the people who are not voting?
• What information and help do they need to become voters?
• How do we reach all community members with fair and honest information so that they can vote responsibly?
Using a variety of media may be the answer to reaching many potential voters! Please join us as our speakers share their insights on how LAist and KPCC use broadcast, online and print media to reach and inform citizens. We will also learn about California State League's recent successful work with TikTok and Snapchat.

STATE OF THE NATION: US ELECTION SYSTEMS & SECURITY

What can the League of Women Voters—and you—do to improve our elections? The LWV of SCC is sponsoring two webinars on “State of the Nation: Threats to Our Election Systems/Security and How We Can Better Engage Voters.”

On October 8, 2022, keynote speaker Kim Alexander, President of the California Voter Foundation (CVF), will explore what some major election problems are and offer possible solutions. In response to growing threats and harassment of election officials, Kim and CVF are leading a nationwide, nonpartisan network of leaders across multiple sectors working to support and protect election officials and election administration. Current priorities include improving election workers’ safety and security, curtailing election mis- and disinformation, increasing funding and support for election administration.
One of the promising approaches to improving elections, Ranked Choice Voting, will be explored more in-depth at a second event on still-to-be-confirmed October 22nd or 29th. The five LWVs of Santa Clara County support using RCV for all County offices—Board of Supervisors, District Attorney, Sheriff, and Assessor—and wrote this August 10, 2022, letter to the County Board of Supervisors recommending its use.
