LWVCS Co-Presidents' Letter
Election Season is Here!
Elections
The “Official Voter Information Guide” has been mailed, ballots will be sent out the week of Oct 9th, and election day is November 8th.
Our new website has a fantastic list of events as well as election information. Be sure to go to LWVCS.org and look for the Red Button or click here to see all the details on the forums.
Candidates
We’ve already begun hosting Candidate Forums and have several more to go. The candidate forums are recorded and available on our website within two or three days of the forum.
When evaluating a candidate be sure to watch candidate forums on our website and check out the candidate’s websites. Understand the candidates’ priorities and track record. Understand how they will represent you. Don’t depend on fliers in the mail. When possible, watch the candidates in action.
The League works to ensure good governance at all levels. We do our best to make sure that our governmental processes and institutions produce results that meet the needs of our communities while making the best use of resources at their disposal and to do so in a civil and transparent manner. As you get ready to vote for the candidates in addition to evaluating their positions on issues also evaluate if they are also exhibit the practices of good governance. How elected officials govern is as important as their position on issues. Their approach to governance can divide our communities or bring them together.
Ballot Measures
Forums explaining the pros and cons of the ballot measures will happen in the second half of October. Fortunately, there are only 7 state propositions and no local propositions.
These forums will also be recorded and available on LWVCS.org.
Voter’s Edge – the best resource to help complete your ballot
The League has a great resource with Voter's Edge which is an unbiased online guide to elections covering federal, state, and local races in California. The site is updated daily.
The California ballot can be daunting and Voter’s Edge helps you work through your ballot, candidates and ballot measures, with excellent unbiased information.
Watch Parties
Whether watching one of our forums live or as a recording, consider hosting a watch party to review the candidates or ballot measures; this is a great way to get informed and have fun.
Membership
Membership renewals are continuing this month. If you need any assistance, please email membership@lwvcs.org. We appreciate our members and are here to help you make the renewal process easier. This year does require that you log in, but we have other solutions for you as well so don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help.
Interns needed
Our high school interns are returning and we’re excited to have their help in bringing voter services to our community. If you know of a high school student that would be interested in helping us, please email Presidents@lwvcs.org. Helping empower voters and making democracy work is inspiring and important work. We welcome you to be a part of it!

| __________________________________ | What Will Our Future Be Like?
The Board of the League of Women Voters San Jose / Santa Clara has recently voted to support Green Foothills’ Centennial Vision (Green Future: Envisioning 2062), pending a decision by LWV Bay Area to also support the Vision. Our decision was based on the League’s strongly established positions on climate resilience, the wise use of natural resources, affordable housing, and diversity, equity and inclusion. We encourage League Bay Area to read and support the Centennial Vision as a pathway for us to steward our local lands.
A link to the Centennial Vision is included: https://www.greenfoothills.org/vision/ | __________________________________ | Creating Stewards of the Future
Environmental Volunteers (EV) is grateful to the League of Women Voters for supporting past field trip programs and sharing the word about Environmental Volunteers. We also recognize that we have many shared volunteers who are also members of the League. At the start of our 50th academic year we recognize that education is essential to creating a society of voters who are aligned with protecting our environment. The next generation of voters are the students that we teach. In 50 years we have reached 519,000 future voters.
EV was founded 50 years ago during a time when people were beginning to wake up to the fact that we needed to learn how to care for our planet. During this time, hundreds of teachers called in and asked for help teaching nature topics. In response, a group of women raised money and developed volunteer-led classroom and outdoor programs to meet these needs. Each year more teachers requested the classes, and the core of volunteers grew. EV’s focus was to have volunteers teach children environmental topics. Initially, the curriculum was focused on local Baylands Ecology. Since then, these meaningful outdoor learning experiences for young students have powered five decades of environmental education and awareness in the Bay Area.
Today, EV continues to teach Baylands Ecology along with many other relevant science and nature topics. We prepare children to be environmental stewards now and to be responsible and engaged adults. The experiences that the students have in the classroom or on a field trip with EV will influence the decisions they make in the future as our next generation of voters. | __________________________________ |

What can the League of Women Voters—and you—do to improve our elections? The LWV of SCC is sponsoring two webinars on “State of the Nation: Threats to Our Election Systems/Security and How We Can Better Engage Voters.” Keynote speaker Kim Alexander, President of the California Voter Foundation (CVF), will explore what some major election problems are and offer possible solutions. In response to growing threats and harassment of election officials, Kim and CVF are leading a nationwide, nonpartisan network of leaders across multiple sectors working to support and protect election officials and election administration. Current priorities include improving election workers’ safety and security, curtailing election mis- and disinformation, increasing funding, and support for election administration.
One of the promising approaches to improving elections, Ranked Choice Voting, will be explored more in-depth at a second event on still-to-be-confirmed October 22nd or 29th. The five LWVs of Santa Clara County support using RCV for all County offices—Board of Supervisors, District Attorney, Sheriff, and Assessor—and wrote this August 10, 2022, letter to the County Board of Supervisors recommending its use.

to Protect Democracy This Month?
Many thanks to our great volunteers who staffed the Voter Registration table at the Cupertino Library to mark National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday September 20, as well as on Sunday, September 18. We were extremely successful in engaging with voters, answering their questions, helping them get voter information online and telling them about our League’s candidate forums. Many voters were interested in taking home our flyers. We started tracking the number of people stopping at our table from noon on Tuesday and had a tally of 45 people. Our library sponsors were very happy and appreciative.
Volunteers: Barbara Bravo, Suzanne Ford, Daniel Dobkin, Beth Claywell, Judi Pogue, Laura Wallace, Ted Wallace, Julie Dalrymple, Nicole Sidovar, Marilyn Sherry, Adrian Kolb, Mary Spagnol, Helen Wiant

Litigation is a crucial part of the work we do to empower voters and defend democracy. I am excited to introduce the LWVUS Legal Center, a database on lwv.org that showcases up-to-date information about our litigation work. Users can search cases by name, state, or topic to find information on historic and active cases.
Read our press release and check out this new resource on our website.
You can now find track and learn more about important litigation in LWV's digital Legal Center. Read about current cases on voting rights, abortion access, redistricting, and more! This is a living resource, so more cases will be added as our work progresses.
On the left is our own Nancy Smith ready to lead the vote!
