Voting: Our Right and Responsibility

As US citizens voting is one of our most important rights and responsibilities. Fighting for the right for representation and the vote precipitated the birth of our nation. Securing and preserving the right to vote for all US citizens has required perpetual work and vigilance since our inception. So please do vote and do so in an informed manner.

Informed voting: Knowing that the California ballot can be daunting we recommend using  Voters Edge California and LWCS.org. These are sources of balanced nonpartisan information.

Getting the vote out: For those of you that have been actively working to get out the vote, thank you so very much!  For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity, please reach out to friends, family, and neighbors and encourage them to vote. Consider hosting a fill out your ballot party. Our democracy only works when people are empowered with the facts and vote for great leaders and great laws.

Election day: is Tuesday, November 8^th. If possible, please vote early.

Thank you: Our Voter Service team has done an outstanding job of providing 10 local candidate forums and 3 Pro/Con presentations plus all the support work to create our videos and website pages.  A big thank you to the team led by Roberta Hollimon, the Chair of Voter Service and includes Nancy Smith, Mike Serrone, Pam Anderson, Bruce Kendall, Marilyn Sherry, Helen Wiant, Marieann Shovlin, Teagan Ahrens, Maggie Garza, Mary Spagnol, Rose Grymes, Yi Ding, Heather Logie , Beth Claywell, Tracey Edwards and Elaine Manley.   And a special thank you to Valérie Suarès, the Chair of the SNAIL organization in Sunnyvale for her incredible efforts to help us with developing a new and improved template for the next election season. SNAIL also made a generous donation to our organization to thank us for our Voter Service efforts. We greatly appreciate all your time and support. 

Be an Election night observer: We plan to go to our Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters on Election Night as observers. It’s an important action and you can see first-hand how well our election process is run under the leadership of Shannon Bushey. Shannon is a stellar example of an Election official with high integrity and extensive knowledge. She runs a very effective and efficient process.  Truly inspiring.  If you’d like to join us, please email  presidents@lwvcs.org.

Lots more coming after November 8^th: Once the elections wrap up, our attention will turn to our next event hosted by the LWV Santa Clara County Civil Discourse Committee on Nov 12 on Policing in our Community. You’ll also find several opportunities to jump on a Zoom call (Coffee Hour, November 17 at 11 am) to get your questions about the League answered and  to get to know our members.  Check out our upcoming events section on our web site. for more information.

• Not Going Quietly - The The League of Women Voters of Berkeley, Albany, and Emeryville (LWVBAE) and co-sponsors invite you to join us for the second event in the series “Our US Healthcare System: Facing the Challenges and Bucking the Odds.”  

  On Thursday, November 17, from 6 to 8:45 PM, we will present the documentary, “Not Going Quietly,” which chronicles the response of lawyer and activist, Ady Barkan, when a bill is introduced in Congress that would cut disability benefits he needs for the care of his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The film and panel discussion that follows will be presented virtually and will be free for all attendees.

• Are you a young person interested in combating voter suppression?If so, join us on Saturdays at 3-4:30 pm EDT to make calls to youth voters of color! We'll be calling other young people across the South to combat voter suppression and get out the vote!
