LWVCS Co-Presidents' January, 2023 Letter

We hope you enjoyed your holidays and wish you another successful trip around the sun in 2023!

The LWV Cupertino-Sunnyvale Board

Our board is composed of a really terrific group of people doing important work in our community. It is satisfying and rewarding service to the community.

We are often told that our League is an important and vital resource to the community and we are both gratified and humbled by these comments. We also, in just about every newsletter, ask for your participation in our various activities.

Today, though we are asking for you to consider joining our board. We are in need of several new board members as some of our board members are ready to retire from the board after many, many years of service.

None of our board members would say they have plenty of free time;  but every one of them have the heart and passion to make their community better. It is said that “you make a living by what you get but, you make a life by what you give.” Please consider joining our board and giving back to our community.

If you’re interested in joining our board, please contact our Nominating Committee at communications@lwvcs.org.

Lawsuit Against the City of Cupertino

As you may recall, we have filed a lawsuit against the City of Cupertino. The lawsuit concerns the City’s lobbying ordinance which we believe is overly broad and vague with the effect of chilling the free speech of residents and non-profits like LWV Cupertino-Sunnyvale. Our League felt it was important to protect the right of free speech of all residents and non-profits in the city. Please know that LWVCS is composed solely of unpaid volunteers and we only speak when something is vital to our mission and/or within our expertise.  We sincerely hope the newly elected city council will review and modify the lobbying ordinance to cure the problems our lawsuit highlights allowing us to withdraw the lawsuit.

If you haven’t had a chance to look in detail at the changes on our website, please take some time to click on the various pages as well as complete your membership profile of interests.  It’s a great resource.  A big thank you to our Communications Committee for completing this time intensive task. The results are outstanding! Thank you Marieann, Marilyn, Beth, Pam, and Bruce!

Please save these dates:

Meet Your Elected Officials Event

Annual Program Planning Meeting

We will have our annual planning meeting, which we internally call Program Planning, on Feb 16 from 7 to 8:30pm. Location to be announced.  Please be sure to answer the survey in advance of the meeting.

Annual Business Meeting – Please save the date

And since we’re talking about meetings, our Annual Business Meeting including electing new Board members will be in person on Jun 24 from 1:30 to 3:30pm at Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church.

Thank you for your membership and support of our efforts to help keep democracy working.

We look forward to seeing you in the new year!

Elaine & Tracey

Your Co-Presidents
