LWVCS Co-Presidents' May, 2023 Letter

State Convention and local activities

In April, our League hosted a booth at the Annual Cupertino Earth Day Festival. We had the “wheel of questions” and tested/educated people on our government. Most struggled with the questions and were happy to learn the answers. Questions like Who is the Cupertino Mayor? (answer: Hung Wei – who is also a League member); and Who is their State Assemblymember? (answer was based on where they lived and we showed how to use VotersEdge.org to learn who it is.  We introduced them to our work in the community and encouraged them to participate in their government.  It was a great opportunity to connect with our neighbors and spread the message of civic engagement on such a beautiful day.

Our State Convention is being held May 19-21 in San Francisco.  We have several members attending and look forward to their reports.  We’ll share some of the highlights through future e-blasts.  Convention is always a great opportunity to discuss pressing issues quickly, elect the new board for the state, and share ideas among Leagues.

Please register and join us in person at our Annual Meeting on June 24 from 1:30 to 3:30pm at Sunnyvale Presbyterian.  It will be a great opportunity to discuss and vote on some important changes for our local League. The Annual Meeting Kit will go out around June 1st. You can register here.    Please note that this will be in person only and will not be on Zoom.

We will host two high school interns this summer.  If you know someone that would be interested in learning more about League and civic engagement, please forward the application to them.  It’s available on this link.

Last but not least, we appreciate all of you that donated during our Community Appeal program. Your support makes our work possible - so thank you!

Your Co-Presidents, Elaine & Tracey

City of Sunnyvale:

Sunnyvale is updating its Housing Element to comply with the State’s requirement. They missed the January 31, 2023 deadline and are working to submit a revision in March. I encourage you all to look into it and provide feedback, if you have not already done so.  Not having a Housing Element means builders can ignore many zoning restrictions.
