Rising political polarization and declining civility in political engagement are critical problems of our time, partly because they stand as barriers to addressing all other social problems. Without addressing entrenched political divisions, effective action on pressing issues like global warming, poverty, immigration, and health care is nearly impossible. The Polarization and Social Change Lab at Stanford conducts cutting-edge research to address key challenges facing society today. Their multidisciplinary team works across the fields of social psychology, political science, sociology, organizational behavior, and cognitive science. In this session, Chagai M. Weiss will share their research that confirms the positive impact of bipartisan Disagree Better ads recorded by Governors. Seeing leaders engage across differences had a depolarizing impact on viewers – leading to lower levels of animosity toward supporters of the other party, greater receptiveness to conversations with supporters of the other party, and greater support for bipartisan political cooperation.
