LWVCS Co-Presidents' November Letter
Voting: Our Right and Responsibility
As US citizens voting is one of our most important rights and responsibilities. Fighting for the right for representation and the vote precipitated the birth of our nation. Securing and preserving the right to vote for all US citizens has required perpetual work and vigilance since our inception. So please do vote and do so in an informed manner.
Informed voting: Knowing that the California ballot can be daunting we recommend using Voters Edge California and LWCS.org. These are sources of balanced nonpartisan information.
Getting the vote out: For those of you that have been actively working to get out the vote, thank you so very much! For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity, please reach out to friends, family, and neighbors and encourage them to vote. Consider hosting a fill out your ballot party. Our democracy only works when people are empowered with the facts and vote for great leaders and great laws.
Election day: is Tuesday, November 8th. If possible, please vote early.
Thank you: Our Voter Service team has done an outstanding job of providing 10 local candidate forums and 3 Pro/Con presentations plus all the support work to create our videos and website pages. A big thank you to the team led by Roberta Hollimon, the Chair of Voter Service and includes Nancy Smith, Mike Serrone, Pam Anderson, Bruce Kendall, Marilyn Sherry, Helen Wiant, Marieann Shovlin, Teagan Ahrens, Maggie Garza, Mary Spagnol, Rose Grymes, Yi Ding, Heather Logie , Beth Claywell, Tracey Edwards and Elaine Manley. And a special thank you to Valérie Suarès, the Chair of the SNAIL organization in Sunnyvale for her incredible efforts to help us with developing a new and improved template for the next election season. SNAIL also made a generous donation to our organization to thank us for our Voter Service efforts. We greatly appreciate all your time and support.
Be an Election night observer: We plan to go to our Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters on Election Night as observers. It’s an important action and you can see first-hand how well our election process is run under the leadership of Shannon Bushey. Shannon is a stellar example of an Election official with high integrity and extensive knowledge. She runs a very effective and efficient process. Truly inspiring. If you’d like to join us, please email presidents@lwvcs.org.
Lots more coming after November 8th: Once the elections wrap up, our attention will turn to our next event hosted by the LWV Santa Clara County Civil Discourse Committee on Nov 12 on Policing in our Community. You’ll also find several opportunities to jump on a Zoom call (Coffee Hour, November 17 at 11 am) to get your questions about the League answered and to get to know our members. Check out our upcoming events section on our web site. for more information.
We look forward to working with you on a future event,
Elaine & Tracey
Co-Presidents

State of the Nation - US Elections Events
What can the League of Women Voters—and you—do to improve our elections? The LWV of SCC has sponsored two webinars on “State of the Nation: Threats to Our Election Systems/Security and How We Can Better Engage Voters.” Keynote speaker Kim Alexander, President of the California Voter Foundation (CVF), will explore what some major election problems are and offer possible solutions. In response to growing threats and harassment of election officials, Kim and CVF are leading a nationwide, nonpartisan network of leaders across multiple sectors working to support and protect election officials and election administration. Current priorities include improving election workers’ safety and security, curtailing election mis- and disinformation, increasing funding, and support for election administration. You can view the Part 1 event recording here.
-
One of the promising approaches to improving elections, Ranked Choice Voting, was explored more in-depth at a second event on October 29th. The five LWVs of Santa Clara County support using RCV for all County offices—Board of Supervisors, District Attorney, Sheriff, and Assessor—and wrote this August 10, 2022, letter to the County Board of Supervisors recommending its use. You can view the Oct. 29 event recording here.

The film and panel discussion that follows will be presented virtually and will be free for all attendees.

2022 Election Year Success!
The Voter Service Team did a fantastic job as they empowered voters and defended democracy during this election season. They produced eight candidate forums, two Pros and Cons presentations, staffed two Voter Registration events, prepared two programs on election systems including Ranked Choice Voting, helped candidates put their information on Voter’s Edge, and staffed a League table with voter information at the Cupertino Volunteer Fair. Voters in Cupertino and Sunnyvale are well informed on candidates and ballot measures as they make their decisions as to how they will vote.
Thanks to this great team: Teagan Ahrens, Pam Anderson, Beth Claywell, Yi Ding, Tracey Edwards, Maggie Garza, Rose Grymes, Roberta Hollimon, Bruce Kendall, Heather Logie, Elaine Manley, Mike Serrone, Marilyn Sherry, Marieann Shovlin, Nancy Smith, Mary Spagnol, and Helen Wiant.

Here's the note from their last meeting - which included a celebration of Mission Accomplished - completion of Club Express implementation!
