Black History Month has been celebrated every February since 1976. It is a time to recognize the achievements, history and culture of Black Americans and people of African descent. The theme of this year is Black Resistance, exploring how “African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression in all forms.”
The National Museum of African American History and Culture is hosting a free online activities through the month. People can also enjoy several programs happening in our libraries.

Meet your Elected Officials
We have an amazing opportunity to meet many of our elected officials. Saturday, Feb 11 from 2 to 3:30pm at BJ’s in Cupertino. Be sure to RSVP now as the space is limited. Register at this link
Both new and returning officials will be in attendance. This will be your opportunity to casually mix and mingle with these officials. Hors d'oeuvres and soft drinks will be provided.
This promises to be a great event please do attend.
LWV 103rd Anniversary
On Feb 14th, the League celebrates its 103rd Anniversary. In lieu of candy or flowers please consider giving the gift of a League membership to your sweetheart. O.K. we were only kidding give them all three. Seriously though as an anniversary present to our League, please invite a friend, family member, or colleague to join the League. There is lots of great information and history to share with a prospective member on the website and be sure to review 100 years of LWV.
Annual Planning Meeting
As we do each year on Thursday, Feb 16th at 7pm we will review several possible projects we could work on over the year. Critical to the success of Program Planning is finding people who are interested in working on the projects that are selected. So please come and help us select projects you would be interested in working on. The meeting will be via Zoom meeting and you can register at this link.

This month we recognize both Roberta Hollimon and Marilyn Howard on their 50th anniversary as LWV members. Congratulations and thank you to both for their 50 years of contribution. We are so fortunate to have both as members of LWVCS.

Our SWSCV League is participating in a foreign policy association’s “Great Decisions’ program” that has flourished for over 60 years. We invite you to join this largest discussion program in America on world affairs.
2023 Great Decision (8) Meetings will take place twice a month, on the 1st & 3rd Fridays, from 10:30-12:30 starting in February.

County Boosts Mental Health Navigator Program
The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors recently increased funding and staff for the County’s Behavioral Health Navigator Program, an initiative proposed by Supervisor Joe Simitian. The new County program, which launched in July 2022, helps residents navigate the County’s mental health system, including public and private resources.

Cupertino Releases Housing Element Draft
The City of Cupertino has released a draft of its 6th Cycle Housing Element and is inviting public comment through December 23. The draft will be available for a 30-day public review and comment period. After the comment period closes, the City will review and consider all comments received and will revise the element for consideration and final adoption.
