We are not hosting a Primary Candidate Forum for CA State Assembly District 28, which covers Los Gatos and Monte Sereno, because there are only two candidates. Thus, current Assemblyperson Gail Pellerin and Candidate LIz Lawler will appear on the November ballot.
PROS & CONS
Our Leagues will be hosting Pros & Cons presentations to review the one measure on the March Ballot, which is a major overhaul of the Mental Health Act in CA. This ballot measure proposes much stronger involuntary commitment provisions. Helping people through a mental health crisis presents a critical balance of preserving an individual’s rights with keeping them safe.Studying the details of this ballot measure is extremely important.

For decades, voters in California have turned to Voter's Edge, an online voter guide, to learn more about the candidates and measures on their ballot. Leagues in California have now changed to share a national platform, VOTE411, used by LWV throughout the country. Local Leagues will continue to contact local candidates to encourage them to post information about their qualifications and priorities. Voters will go to the VOTE411.org website, enter their address, and see what's on their personal ballot. The site also includes convenient links for voter registration, voting options, and information on Candidate Forums and Pros & Cons presentations.

- On Jan. 16 — the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day — communities across the country will gather to mark the National Day of Racial Healing. Make a resolution in the new year to connect, build relationships and bridge divides with friends and family, coworkers and neighbors to foster racial healing.
In Washington D.C., the Aspen Institute will explore connections between values, leadership and social impact in conversation with Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jonathan Eig, bestelling biographer of Dr. Martin Luther King.
Meanwhile, a woman has invited her neighbors in Charlotte, NC for a coffeeshop meetup to build connections using WKKF’s Racial Healing Conversation Guide.
- California Environmental Voters Education Fund is a partner for the United States Senate Debate between candidates Steve Garvey, Barbara Lee, Katie Porter, and Adam Schiff!!
U.S. Senate Debate Night: California will be co-moderated by Fox 11’s Elex Michaelson and Politico’s Melanie Mason at USC’s Bovard Auditorium. The debate will air live and commercial free on Fox 11 Los Angeles, Fox 2 Bay Area, and iHeartRadio at 6 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2024.
- Nonprofit Advocacy Series - Advocacy 101: Transforming Nonprofits into Effective Changemakers - Monday, January 29 at 3pm - 5pm, Free to Register!
Every nonprofit can and should have a policy advocacy strategy that advances its mission and helps nonprofits be effective allies to grassroots social justice changemakers. Advocacy is one of the important strategies nonprofits can take to bring the community’s attention to the issues they care about and bring about meaningful change for the people they serve.
One of the greatest myths about nonprofits is that they cannot participate in advocacy or lobbying. However, with the right tools and information, you can make policy advocacy work for your organization and your community. Advocacy can include numerous activities such as policy research, public education, lobbying elected officials, educating the media, and voter engagement.
In this workshop, attendees will learn:
- High-level but essential information about how nonprofits can legally get involved in issue-based advocacy work and the key differences between advocacy and lobbying;
- The essential components of nonprofit advocacy, including a recap of how to establish an advocacy shop, analyzing and prioritizing issues, campaigning, coalition work, among others;
- How to include the community you serve and your Board in setting organizational advocacy priorities and in advocacy activities; and
- Tips and tricks from expert panelists as they share their advocacy stories from the field.

Tommy Gong joined the Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder-Registrar Department as its Chief Deputy Clerk-Recorder in July 2021. He serves as an Advisory Board member for the Election Official Legal Defense Network and has led the efforts of the Coalition of Bay Area Election Officials for counties to join forces and collaborate on building public trust in elections in shared media markets.
