March is Women's History Month, a good time to recognize the many achievements of women and the need for continued action on sex and gender equality. There could not be a better time to continue our urgent fight for certification and publication of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) into the US Constitution.
The Equal Rights Amendment will protect the equality of rights under the law regardless of sex in the United States. It will provide a vital tool to the judicial branch to combat discrimination, prevent the rollback of equal rights, and pave the way for additional legislative progress.
The ERA has already met the very high bar for amending the Constitution. In 1972, Congress passed it with more than a 2/3 vote, and, in 2020, Virginia became the 38th and final state needed to ratify it. However, more than four years later, the ERA is still awaiting publication. We cannot let another year go by without equality as the law of the land.
The good news is that there is a bipartisan, congressional resolution affirming the validity of the ERA as part of the Constitution. The League is working tirelessly to demand federal action, but as a constituent, your voice MATTERS. Take one minute now to urge your members of Congressto act and ensure that this is the last International Women’s Day without the ERA!

On March 27th, Supervisor Simitian will be hosting his 9th annual public meeting regarding the future of Lehigh Southwest Cement Plant & Permanente Quarry (located in the Cupertino foothills). A number of steps have been taken to bring an end to mining at the quarry, close the cement plant permanently, and begin the process of reclamation and restoration. The annual public meeting will provide a status report from the County and the various regulatory agencies with oversight of Lehigh’s activities as we look to the future. The details are as follows:
What: 2024 Lehigh Southwest Cement Plant & Permanente Quarry Public Meeting
When: Wednesday, March 27, 2024 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
