Co-Presidents' Updates
We Need You !
This is something you are always hearing from us, we need your time, we need your donation…
It has never been truer than right now; we badly need your help.
November Elections
We are living in an extraordinary time; an attempted assassination of former President Trump, President Biden declining the Democratic nomination and endorsing Vice President Harris, potentially the first woman President.
| | |
November Elections
Casting your vote and engaging in the democratic process is more important than ever.
Our League is looking for volunteers to help support our traditional work during the election. We need your help with:
- Candidate forums for school boards, city councils, Assembly, and Congressional races, and
- Development and delivery of pro con presentations.
If this is of interest to you, please click here.
New this year
We need you help in support of the Registrar of Voters, ROV, and the financial support of our Local League. This year we are undertaking a new project. We will become secure couriers for transportation of ballots from the ballot boxes and Vote Centers to the ROV in San Jose. We need your help to sign up to be a courier:
- This will mean you will spend a couple hours paired with one other person and pick up ballots and deliver them to the ROV,
- That other person can be a friend or family member, or someone we can pair you with.
- Our local League, if you agree, will receive $65 for each person per trip. That mean $130 for each pair of couriers will be donated to LWVCS.
The ROV counts on volunteer support like this to make the elections run efficiently and the financial support our League receives will be significant.
If this is of interest, please click here.
If you would like to learn more about this opportunity, please click here. This link will take you to a presentation by the ROV regarding courier and other volunteer opportunities.
Congratulations - 50 Years!
Congratulations to Roberta Hollimon for achieving Lifetime Status, an active member for 50 years with the League.
Congratulations also to Tracey Edwards. Elaine named Tracey the “defender of democracy” for all her accomplishments with our league over the last 5 years on our board.
Excellent accomplishments and many thanks!
Please do volunteer this year for candidate forums, ProCon development, and/or supporting the ROV.
All these activities will help our community and will be personally rewarding.
Thank you,
Elaine & Tracey, Your Co-Presidents | __________________________________ | | From LWV National...
"Join us this year on Thursday, August 1, for National Poll Worker Recruitment Day! Leagues can find more information about participating in this day of action, as well as access social media tools and our unique registration link with our toolkit. I know from personal experience that serving as a poll worker is both important and fulfilling work.
Our League
Just weeks ago, we came together both in person in Washington, DC, and online for our 56th Biennial
National Convention, where I was honored to be elected your national board president for the
next two years.
Like so many of you, I am deeply committed to our mission of empowering voters and defending democracy, and I cannot wait to continue this work as your president!
In my Convention remarks to delegates on Sunday, I spoke about my vision for the next two years
and the power of women to create a more perfect democracy. Amid a busy election season, our nation
is facing existential threats to democracy. As we honor and reflect on our 104-year-old legacy as a trusted, nonpartisan voice that values grassroots action, we cannot face modern challenges without building a League that is bigger, bolder, and more powerful.
Over 1,200 members from all 50 states, DC, and the Virgin Islands joined us for Convention this past June.
We kicked off our new biennium with powerful remarks from our incoming CEO, Celina Stewart.
In addition to impressive workshops and caucuses, attendees also heard inspiring words from
our keynote speaker, Kim Teehee, the Cherokee Nation’s delegate to Congress.
This is just a snapshot of our highlights from Convention:you can find our full debrief, including
a day-by-day recap, on the League Management Site here.
Dianna Wynn, LWV President
Stephanie Doute, LWVC Executive Director, joined League members and delegates from across
California in Washington D.C. for the LWV United States National Convention, themed “Turn Up and
Turn Out.” Among the valuable networking and collaboration opportunities, an exciting announcement was made: Celina Stewart will be the next CEO of the LWVUS. Formerly the League’s Chief Counsel, Celina received a
warm and enthusiastic welcome during her acceptance speech, where she declared that, “women are being called to save Democracy.” Her vision is clear: “Together, we will,” and the LWVC wholeheartedly shares this vision. We are thrilled to welcome Celina as the new CEO of the League of Women Voters of the United States.

“Help!” A message from a frantic voter, two years ago, who wanted her vote to count but was leaving on a trip before she received her mail-in ballot. Our volunteer replied, “as you are heading for the airport, just stop by the Registrar of Voters office and ask for your ballot. You will receive it, mark it and drop it in the ballot box. Your vote will be counted. Several weeks later, this voter wrote that she received a message from the Registrar’s office indicating her ballot had been received and counted.
The League of Women Voters Cupertino Sunnyvale (LWVCS) is here to support voter participation like we did in this situation. Even though we are volunteer run, we do have operating expenses for which we need to fundraise.
This brings us to the purpose of this article; we are delighted to provide an opportunity for our members to be involved in the November election and help us raise much needed funding.
Have you ever wondered how all the ballots from vote centers and drop boxes get to the Registrar of Voters to be counted? The election logistics team at the ROV works with organizations, like ours, whose members sign up to help with this very critical task in all our elections. Someone must pick up these ballots and deliver them to the ROV every day! Many workers are needed during these days leading up to and including election day. ROV pays a stipend for the work, and we ask our members to donate this stipend to our Local League, contributing to our fundraising efforts.
The ROV requires workers to work in pairs to always have two sets of eyes on every ballot. This presents a great opportunity for members to invite their family and friends to partner with them and work one shift together. Many of our board members are taking the opportunity to multi-task--spend time with a friend while collecting and delivering ballots.
So now we are asking for “Help” from all of you! Please sign up for one or several shifts. This is a terrific way to provide a service to the community, ensure every vote gets counted, and help fund our Local League.
We have set up an easy way for everyone (members and non-members referred by one of our members) to sign up. Go to our website here. here. If this link doesn't work, there is a button on our homepage that will take you to the sign-up page. Our membership director, Nina Wong-Dobkin, is coordinating this effort so feel free to e-mail her with questions at Membership@lwvcs.org. | __________________________________ | Upcoming LWV Civil Discourse Committee Event!

LWVCA News:
Young people have the potential to be a powerful force in elections, but only if they get involved and make voting a habit.
To encourage students to become active voters once they are old enough to cast a ballot, Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond invite high school and middle school students, teachers, and principals to participate in the 2024 California Student Mock Election, which will take place on October 8, 2024, for the General Election. Voter Service Report - Volunteers Needed for Election Events
The LWVCS Voter Service Team will be hosting many voter education events to help voters understand their ballots and make informed choices. If you can help us with any of the activities listed below, please email voterservice@lwvcs.org.
Candidate Forums:
Our league will be hosting ~15 candidate forums in September and October. We need volunteers to help us work behind the scenes, contacting candidates and preparing slides for the presentations. Is this something YOU can help with?
ProCon Analysis Preparation:
Do you like digging into the details and really understanding the ballot initiatives? Come join the Pro Con team to help us prepare non-partisan presentations about the state and local ballot initiatives. We need help both researching the propositions and preparing the presentations. We have templates and tools for you to use.
VOTE411:
VOTE411 is a valuable online resource where voters can learn more about what's on their ballots. Volunteers are needed to contact candidates to encourage them to provide information for VOTE411. Training sessions are scheduled for early August and will also be recorded. This is a job for you if you need some scheduling flexibility.
Communications:
We need help spreading the word on all of these events. Could you help with graphics, social media, our online newsletters, or other advertising or promotion?
Please email voterservice@lwvcs.org if you can help with any of these activities or if you have any other ideas of how to get involved.
