Leagues Making a Difference: Coast to Coast
LWV of Greater Pittsburgh continues to impress with their creation of programs and resources regarding civic education and mis/disinformation. And speaking of Americans supporting the traditions of democracy, here’s a great new video the LWVGPH created about our history of the Peaceful Transfer of Power!
LWV Greenwich, Connecticut is pleased to be welcoming all of its state house and senate candidates for debates this October, and, as part of our Voters Guide, they will be asking the candidates to explain how they plan to work across the aisle to achieve their legislative goals. In addition, they are running a series of events (in person) to build community, offering opportunities for those from different political perspectives to gather and converse with one another before the election. They are also inviting the whole community to an event to build trust in the election process, moderated by two Registrars (one Republican and one Democrat) to demonstrate how their voting machines work, how the chain of custody is controlled for ballots (absentee and in-person), and other items that often act as flash points for those who question the integrity of our elections.
LWV of Illinois has established a Mis/Disinformation task force that has created a webpage and educational resources for local leagues to use in their communities to bring awareness to mis/disinformation. Email misdisinfotaskforce@lwvil.org
LWV Diablo Valley website is filled with resources regarding fact checking, media literacy, lessons, curriculum and programming about mis and disinformation.
LWV Larimer County has multiple resources. podcasts and webinars devoted to news literacy to bring awareness to the necessity of being wise information consumers
LWV Alameda is ingenious in that they have created a game called Verfiy it
“Verify It is the game that will clarify your rights as a citizen, answer your voting questions, and challenge the persistent misinformation and disinformation claims that we see every day. We are all susceptible to believing misinformation or disinformation, and we must all become informed citizens to exercise our vote and to protect our democracy.”

AAUW Event: In Conversation with Dr. Tiya Miles; Thursday, September 5, 2 p.m. EST; Join CEO Gloria L. Blackwell for a conversation with AAUW Community Action Grantee, Tiya Miles. Ph.D., about her book “Wild Girls: How the Outdoors Shaped Women Who Challenged a Nation.”
Gloria and Dr. Miles will discuss her latest work that puts girls of all races — and the landscapes they loved — at center stage and reveals the impact of the outdoors on women’s independence, resourcefulness, and vision. It focuses on trailblazing women of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—from Harriet Tubman to Louisa May Alcott to Dolores Huerta. Navigating the woods, following the stars, playing sports, and taking to the streets in peaceful protest were not only joyful pursuits, but also techniques to resist assimilation, racism, and sexism. Wild Girls evokes landscapes as richly as the girls who roamed in them—and argues for equal access to outdoor spaces for young women of every race and class today.
