Opportunities to Celebrate and Learn!

Oct. 9 was Indigenous People’s Day, a day to honor Native Americans and share an accurate history of our nation and others. We are all encouraged to create space not just on Indigenous People’s Day — but every day — to amplify Native American voices and educate yourself or your community. Leagues can find helpful resources around partnering with Native American communities on the League Management Site and learn more about how Native American women inspired the suffrage movement on our blog.

In other League news, do not forget that applications for the LWVUS board and nominating committee are open! Members can also suggest candidates for nominations. Position descriptions, applications, and the nomination suggestion form are available on the League Management Site. The deadline to apply closes on Oct. 27, so I encourage you to apply today! You can learn more about the application process, roles, expectations, and more during our Oct. 19 webinar or on this FAQ page.

October is Voter Education Month. Important dates include:

  • 2–6 – National Voter Education Week and High School Voter Registration Week
  • 9 – Indigenous People’s Day
  • 24 – United Nations Day
  • 26 – Vote Early Day, a nonpartisan movement of media companies, businesses, nonprofits, election administrators, and creatives, working to ensure all Americans have the tools to vote early

LWV/NICD (National Institute for Civil Discourse) Special Event Oct 19, 2023

You are invited to the next event on Tuesday, Oct. 17th at 10am Pacific Strengthening Democracy One Classroom at a Time: Teaching Civics and US History with the Case Method Institute. You will learn about the evidence-based discussion and debate project in civics education now being used in all 50 states.

Students and participants experience firsthand how having informed and respectful discussions, grounded in history, ultimately strengthen American democracy. When asked “What would you do?” at pivotal decision points in American history, students are empowered to make respectful, cogent and convincing arguments to others in support of their point of view.  Isn’t this a lesson for all of us?

This session features speakers Melanie Wachtell Stinnett, Managing Director of the Case Method Institute for Education and Democracy (CMI), pioneered by Harvard Business School Professor David Moss, and Deirdre Kamlani, CMI Board Member, who will discuss the CMI experiential civics curriculum. Learn about the positive impact of this project for students and how you can get involved to nominate teachers for the next workshop in December.

The LWV of Greenwich, CT has shared this impactful project with many Leagues around the country and we are so pleased they are sharing it with all of us now too!  This session will NOT be recorded so we hope you can join us.

We look forward to seeing you on the 17th. Click here to register.

Income & Wealth Inequality: Pathways to Balancing the Scales

October Community Conversation, Thursday, October 19th, 4-5:30 pm

“As long as there is poverty in this world, no man can be totally rich even if he has a billion dollars.” - Dr. King, “The American Dream” speech, 1961.

Income disparities are now so pronounced that the average income of America’s richest 1 percent of households was more than 84 times the average income of the bottom 20 percent in 2019, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Disparities in tax policy, challenges to families endeavoring to live on minimum wage jobs, and increasing costs of living are some of the factors contributing to wealth inequality in our nation.

Two approaches to addressing this inequality will be featured in our October 19 webinar, including the Guaranteed Income Program employed by some cities and in Contra Costa County, and the Patriotic Millionaires, who focus on tax policy, increasing the minimum wage, and their hope to pass the Oligarch Act.
Ann Flynn, past LWVDV president, will moderate. The panel will include:

  • Julia Quintero, Elevate Concord Project Manager, Monument Impact
  • Emily McCloskey, Deputy Communications Director, Patriotic Millionaires
  • Kathrine Kagat, Mayors for Guaranteed Income
LWVDV is underwriting simultaneous Spanish translation for this webinar and others in this year's series. Community Conversations webinars are co-sponsored by LWV Diablo Valley, LWV West Contra Costa County, the Contra Costa Library, and Contra Costa TV.

Click here to register. You will receive an email with the Zoom link. The webinar will be recorded and posted on the YouTube sites for the Contra Costa Library and LWVDV
