A Message from the California Secretary of State

Dear California Voter,

All registered California voters will be sent a vote-by-mail ballot with a prepaid, first-class postage return envelope for the March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election.

You have several safe, secure, and reliable options for returning your ballot:

  • Mail – No stamp is required to return your ballot through the US Postal Service. Make sure your ballot is postmarked by March 5, 2024.
  • Drop box – All counties will offer secure drop boxes to return your ballot. Make sure your ballot is deposited by 8:00 p.m. on March 5, 2024.
  • In-person – You can return your ballot to a polling place, vote center, or your county elections office by 8:00 p.m. on March 5, 2024. Many counties will have early voting locations available before Election Day. Voting locations will offer voter registration, replacement ballots, accessible voting machines, and language assistance.

You can also take action to ensure a smooth voting experience:

  • Sign your ballot envelope!! It’s required so that your signature can be compared with the one on file to verify your identity.
  • Use the Voter Information Guide! The Voter Information Guide (VIG) includes important information about the U.S. Senate and Presidential Primary races and the state ballot proposition. The VIG has already been mailed to active registered voters and is available in several languages and in large-print and audio formats at voterguide.sos.ca.gov.
  • Double check the address on your registration. To make sure you get your ballot, you can confirm your address at VoterStatus.sos.ca.gov
  • Track your ballot. You can sign up to receive updates on your vote-by-mail ballot via text (SMS), email, or voice call through the state’s official “Where’s My Ballot?” tracking tool at WheresMyBallot.sos.ca.gov.
  • Make a plan to vote. Decide how you will return your ballot. No matter which method you choose, you can find tools to cast your ballot at vote.ca.gov

Together we can ensure a safe and secure election for all California voters!

And There's More!

Sunnyvale School Bond - Sunnyvale School District Measure C is on the ballot as a referral in Sunnyvale School District on March 5, 2024.

"yes" vote supports this measure to authorize $214 million in bonds for the school district and enact a projected property tax of $15 per $100,000 of assessed value while bonds are outstanding.

"no" vote opposes this measure to authorize $214 million in bonds for the school district and enact a projected property tax of $15 per $100,000 of assessed value while bonds are outstanding.

55 percent supermajority vote is required for the approval of Measure C.

Ballot title

The ballot title for Measure C is as follows:

To continue critical renovation and modernization of local elementary and middle schools, upgrade schools safety/security, improve access to technology, and ensure accessibility for students with disabilities, shall Sunnyvale School District’s measure be adopted authorizing $214 million in bonds at legal interest rates, raising an average of $13.2 million annually for approximately 34 years, at a projected rate of $15 per $100,000 assessed value, with oversight, accountability, all funds benefiting schools, and no funds for administrator salaries?

The LWVCS Board voted to endorse Measure C:

Proposed Text:

Measure C will allow the Sunnyvale School District to create and enhance facilities essential to an outstanding education for all students from transitional kindergarten to award winning middle schools.  The district has shown it is a good steward of the taxpayer’s money as evidenced by its high credit rating and its successful management of previous bond programs. Passage of Measure C will help ensure Sunnyvale continues to have excellent schools that benefit the entire community.
For these reasons the League of Women Voters endorses the Sunnyvale School District, Bond Measure C on the March 5th, 2024 ballot.

Ballot Measures - ProCons and Endorsements

There is only one state measure on the primary ballot, Prop 1, which actually proposes two items: reallocation of some of the current funds counties receive as part of the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) passed in 2004, and a bond measure to build more facilities for mental health needs and housing for the homeless. You can find much more detailed and unbiased, neutral information in the links below.

  • Pros & Cons - The shareable PDF version is available and has excellent information on Prop 1.
  • Pros & Cons video - The video explainer is available on YouTube. You can also find the slide deck.
  • Easy Voter Guide - Our Easy Voter Guide helps the election make sense. English, Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese language versions are currently available at easyvoterguide.org. The Easy Voter Guide also has an excellent analysis of Prop 1.

The CA state League has taken a position against  state Proposition 1.

LWVPA Virtual Speaker Event: featuring Rachael Myrow, Senior Editor of KQED’s Silicon Valley News Desk

Wednesday, March 27, 2024, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Topic: Free Speech in the Digital Age & The Mass Extinction of American Journalism

American journalism, like the other pillars of our democracy developed 250 or so years ago now, is struggling to keep up. Worse, struggling to stay alive. You might be thinking, “I’ve got more news coming at me on my phone, 24/7, than I can handle!” KQED's Rachael Myrow is not discounting your experience. She's warning that what many of us observe about the state of journalism right now is like a wet year late into a mega drought; the larger trend lines point to the challenges in the digital age.

Rachael Myrow is Senior Editor of KQED's Silicon Valley News Desk. You can hear her work on NPR, The World, WBUR's Here & Now, and the BBC. She also guest hosts for KQED's Forum.                         Register Now
