LWVCS Bringing in the Vote

Published on 8/3/2024

This November LWVSC will be helping bring in the vote in a whole new way. The Cupertino-Sunnyvale League will be working with the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters (ROV) in the final days of the election.

Volunteer members and friends of LWVCS have signed up to work  November 2nd - 5th transporting ballots to be counted at ROV headquarters and helping support Voter Centers (the new in-person place to vote). Our roster of volunteers is full!

Every election, the county ROV needs hundreds of volunteers to help make the election process work. While we’re all familiar with the former system of local polling places, with paid volunteer workers there on election Tuesday, the new vote-by-mail system has changed things. Election “day” at the ROV is now 4 weeks long;  Ballot Drop Off boxes are placed out 28 days before election day, and Vote Centers open 10 days before election day. Ballots need to be collected daily from Vote Centers and Ballot Drop Offs located all over Santa Clara County, and a resident of the county can use any of them.

So, while November 5th is the voting deadline this year, the voting period starts a lot earlier. While county employees can handle the support and collection demands in the early days, the pace quickens over the final-weekend rush, and that’s when extra help is needed. That’s when the ROV needs the help of paid volunteers.

The Santa Clara County ROV office likes to work with organized, non-partisan civic groups like Kiwanis, Lions, school boosters, and the League of Women Voters. They have done so for many years. In most cases, these groups use this as a fund-raiser, organizing their volunteers and asking them to designate their ROV stipend to be donated to their group. This is what LWVCS is doing.

This is the first time for LWVCS, but we hope it will become a continuing tradition. We’ve already filled our roster of volunteers for this November, but raising funds through activities like this, that support our mission as well as our finances, is a wonderful way to support the League of Women Voters for the next hundred years.

While our volunteer roster is full for this opportunity, would you be interested in signing up for future such volunteer opportunities? How being a coordinator for such activities in the future?  Click over to the Interests page, and add your name under Voter Service and/or other areas!
